Addiction continues to be a problem for many individuals and families. It is a condition that occurs due to the changes that occur within the brain. When individuals first begin drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, using drugs, or other addictive behaviors i.e.,  gambling, it is a voluntary decision. They learn these behaviors are rewarding and pleasurable. They can be counted on to have fun or relieve negative emotional states (stress or anxiety). For a percentage of individuals, their voluntary use or behavior becomes a compulsion.  This is due to the areas of the brain that are responsible for decision making, impulse control, and delaying instant gratification becomes impaired. This affects an individual’s ability to control their use or addictive behavior resulting in repeated negative consequences.

At the Adult Children Center, we can help individuals facilitate a lifestyle of recovery. We help individuals develop insight and understanding of how their substance use or addictive behavior impacted them.  Individuals identify situations and feelings that lead to use or addictive behaviors and develop healthy coping skills. Individuals are treated with respect, support, and empathy.  By having a positive attitude and a commitment to change, clients begin to achieve personal goals, feel better about themselves, and start to live a more self-fulfilling life.
